N.J. Attorney General Anne Milgram will not remain for Christie administration

By Chris Megerian/Statehouse Bureau

November 09, 2009, 3:53PM

jon-corzine-anne-milgram.JPGAttorney General Anne Milgram speaks alongside Governor Jon Corzine at a press conference in Newark in September. HAMILTON -- Gov.-elect Chris Christie today said New Jersey's Attorney General Anne Milgram won't remain in that post.

"She says she doesn't want to stay," Christie told reporters after an event at Steinert High School, in Mercer County. "Someone who says they don't want to stay, I don't want to consider."

Milgram spokesman David Wald said the attorney general has not spoken with Christie or members of his transition team.

Christie, a former U.S. attorney, has praised Milgram's ability as a prosecutor, and the two worked together to put former Newark mayor Sharpe James behind bars for fraud and conspiracy.

Christie Campaigns N.J. Gov.-elect Chris Christie in Freehold during his campaign.Milgram was 36 when she took the job, making her the second-youngest attorney general in state history.

Christie has not said who he will appoint to replace Milgram, but says he wants a "tough" prosecutor who will work well with the U.S. attorney's office and make fighting corruption a priority.

Top positions often rotate when new administrations take over. Former Gov. James E. McGreevey named David Samson shortly before his inauguration. Outgoing Gov. Jon Corzine first chose Zulima Farber, who left amid ethics concerns after intervening in her boyfriend's traffic stop, then Stuart Rabner, who now is chief justice of the state Supreme Court.

Milgram worked for the U.S. Department of Justice before joining Corzine's U.S. Senate office in 2005. After Corzine became governor, she served as first assistant under Farber and Rabner, then succeeded Rabner in June 2007.

New Jersey's attorney general is both top cop and top lawyer, leading 9,000 employees at the Department of Law and Public Safety. The attorney general also oversees the State Police, the Division of Criminal Justice and the Division of Law, which functions as the state's law firm.
