From the Asbury Park Press "Trouble Shooter" section.

PBA doesn't let civilians have shields
Published in the Asbury Park Press 09/15/05

Q: There seem to be quite a few cars with large, gold metal shields fastened to the rear windows with suction cups. They are prominently displayed to get special attention or consideration.

I know a person who has no police affiliation, yet displays a gold shield. This makes me curious.

What is the requirement to obtain a gold shield and how does one acquire it? Is it political? Are those who hold them retired police officers, or just contributors of the Policemen's Benevolent Association?

Is ownership of these shields restricted in any way? What purpose do they serve?

D.O., Jackson

A: The state PBA, the police officers' union, issues these shields only to members through its locals. These shields always are the property of the PBA, which regulates how they can be used, says Anthony F. Wieners, state PBA vice president.

Civilians are not permitted to display these shields, he says.

The state Fraternal Order of Police and a few other social organizations issue their shields to members and civilians through annual "dues," Wieners says.

The PBA has been trying to convince legislators to pass a law to prevent the civilian public from buying shields, and will continue in this effort, he says.

If the person you know has a PBA shield and is not a PBA member, Wieners would appreciate it if you told him who it is so the PBA can have it recalled.

The state PBA is at 100 Wood Ave. S., Suite 400, Iselin, NJ 08830, fax (732) 636-0172, telephone (832) 636-8860.

Dan, That is private info. The general public should not be made aware of that fact. It's up to the guys that gave the shields away to pass along that info.

PBA is a lot different than the FOP in regards to giving out shields. Each member (police Officer) gets only 2 and the PBA also orders periodic black outs so that stolen shields can be located. I honor the PBA Shields> But I agree the FOP shields are garbage. Unless its an Officers family member. backed up by a family card.

I'm not a big fan of shields at all.. they attract too much attention.  I wish the PBA and FOP would get together and just do away with them entirely.

Hi, I'm new to the board!! I don't know much about those Shields but it seems like their everywhere. I like the way the State Police does it,they give 3 "triangles" every 3 years which has the troopers badge number right on it. So if someone has one they are probably a family member.
